A3.04 Agriculture - Methods and Algorithms, Science, Applications and Policy

Description:
The advent of the unprecedented observations collected by the Sentinel satellite family allow for monitoring of the full agricultural dynamics at national scale down to the single fields. In particular, the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 missions can provide dynamic information on crop area estimates, crop type and agricultural practices in a timely fashion at field scale. Such observations combined with other missions such as Landsat and new commercial satellite constellations sparked new research and application developments ranging from precision agriculture to food security early warning systems. Relevant topics for this range of sessions include innovative algorithms and applications addressing challenges related to water productivity, monitoring of agricultural practices, irrigation management, fertilizer and crop protection optimization, impact assessment of crop diseases and natural hazards, crop yield estimations and forecasts and agricultural statistics. A particular focus will be to provide the status of EO-based application developments addressing Agriculture-related policies. EO products/services can be linked to many different agri-policies (e.g. EC Farm-to-Fork related and the new CAP) and support numerous processes such as water management, ecoscheme monitoring, carbon uptake, grass mowing practices, regenerative agriculture policies and biodiversity, no-tillage and crop rotation.

Convenors: Benjamin Koetz (ESA), Thuy Le Toan (CESBIO/CNES), Belen Franch (Universitat de Valencia / Associate Adjunct Professor at University of Maryland), Heike Bach (Vista), Jippe Hoogeveen (FAO), Gilliams Sven (Vito), Inbal Reshef (GEOGLAM), Sophie Bontemps (UCL), Felix Rembold (DG-JRC), Espen Volden (ESA), Zoltan Szantoi (ESA)

24.06.2021

Dear colleagues and Sen4CAP users,

We would like to inform you that our next webinar, initially planned for July, will be postponed to 14 September. Please, save the date in your calendar! The access link for this 8th webinar will be communicated later in September.

We'd also like to inform you of a possible issue with Sentinel-1 pre-processing using the Sen4CAP v2.0.
The Sen4CAP v2.0 is provided with SNAP 7.0 (and the possibility to use a SNAP 8.0 docker image). Unfortunately, these versions are not able to update some modules in SNAP and for both versions, you might encounter problems with the S1 pre-processing, which does not start.
Meanwhile, a new SNAP minor version (8.0.3) has been released that corrects some issues or updates some locations for orbit files. These corrections are not in the official Sen4CAP 2.0 version but they can be provided for the users encountering issues with S1 pre-processing. Please, contact us on the forum and we will distribute them.
Note that it does not solve everything - for unknown reasons (so far), there could still be some issues of availability of the orbit files for some regions or periods.

I wish you a very nice summer and I look forward to meeting you again in a few weeks.

Kind regards,
Sophie

Plan for a new Sen4CAP module for calculation of agri-environmental indicators for large areas as a result of collaboration with the H2020 NIVA project

The primary purpose of Sen4CAP processing chain is automated Monitoring of agricultural practices, the establishment of Reports, and the Verification of CAP declarations (known as MRV). Nevertheless, the use of remote sensing in the next CAP will probably not be limited to the MRV.

In the framework of the H2020 NIVA project, and at the request of the DGs Agri, Climate and Environment, methods for calculating agri-environmental indicators based on the use of Sentinel data will be tested in several countries via a collaboration between the French Paying Agency (ASP), the IGN and three INRAe laboratories (CESBIO, DYNAFOR, LBAE). Of the twelve indicators proposed by these laboratories, three have been considered as priorities: C budget, biodiversity and nitrate leaching risk. The algorithms used to calculate these agri-environmental indicators for large areas will soon be integrated as a module in the SEN4CAP processing chain.

The module for monitoring and calculating agri-environmental indicators could be very useful to farmers by enabling them to establish agronomic diagnostics on a plot-by-plot basis and thus to improve their practices (input modulation, improvement of soil fertility, etc.) and their net margins.

Check the Theia Bulletin article (pages 8-9) for more details.

We hope you are all doing fine, in this strange period of almost-generalized quarantine.

Following the Sen4CAP hands-on training from January in Belgium, we would like to set up online activities and interactions, through webinars and trainings.

The first webinar is planned for Tuesday 7 April, at 14h30 (CEST time). Webinars will then be organized on a regular basis, every first Tuesday of each month (5th May, 2nd June). During this webinar, we will update you on the project activities and open a question & answer session. Would you have any activity/result to report to the other participants, don't hesitate to contact the project coordinator, Sophie Bontemps.

Online training will also be organized on Tuesday 21 April, 14h30 (CEST time). This training will last around 1h and will explain how to operate the system and upload declarations and auxiliary data.

For all these activities, we will use the GoToMeeting teleconference system. The access link for the 1st Webinar is the following one: https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/911380533. Audio connection is possible directly through your computer, but also by phone. In this latter case, the conference access code is: 911-380-533. You can already do a quick check of your teleconferencing system here. On Tuesday 7 April, the event will be open 30 minutes before the start, also if you want to test it.
